Project Description:
The new campus for Santa Monica College’s Media Technology program and KCRW Public Radio is an unusual fusion of the academic and the professional. Consisting of a renovation of the existing Media Technology building, new ground-up Addition building, new KCRW broadcasting building, and new parking garage, the campus was conceptualized as embodying a narrative story for the progressive sequence of learning. The academic buildings consist of classrooms, professional-grade production spaces, film studio, movie theater, newspaper lab, editing workbays and offices. The new KCRW building, as a real-world center for the convergence of media, is characterized by clustered recording rooms and open, visible workspaces. A central courtyard features a café, supportive landscaping, and event infrastructure, thereby enabling students and professionals to publicly converge as a single creative community.
