More progress on the Hangar Office in Culver City

Construction on Servicon System's Hangar Office is rapidly progressing!  Outside, the 56 kilowatt solar photovoltaic system, consisting of 227 roof-mounted panels and a solar carport structure, is on and humming, generating free, clean electricity.  This system also greatly contributes to securing our anticipated LEED-Platinum rating.  Inside, painting is progressing, restrooms are tiled, mechanical ductwork is installed, and dropped ceilings are ongoing. Left to be installed: millwork, corrugated metal cladding, carpet, glazing, and floor coatings. 

Ed Ogosta speaks at Harvard Club

Ed Ogosta was invited to present the firm's work at the Harvard Club of Southern California's annual holiday dinner last night.  Attended by a group of approximately fifty alumni, the presentation included several of our recent projects.  

Ed will also be speaking to the Club about architect Moshe Safdie's work on January 19th, during a visit to Global Citizen: The Architecture of Moshe Safdie, a current exhibit at the Skirball Cultural Center.

WorkScape features the Hybrid Office

EOA featured in Dwell magazine

We're excited to see our Four Eyes House featured in the October issue of Dwell magazine.  The project is included in the article "Privacy 2.0" by William L. Hamilton, which explores how architecture is redefining notions of domestic privacy in the 21st century.  The author discusses how changes in family structures are offering new opportunities for spatial porosity and social community in the home, providing examples by noted architects Pezo von Ellrichshausen, and Jun Igarashi.  Additionally, while media technologies engage in an ever-escalating assault on our privacy, the architecture of domestic space at its best can offer an escape from the digital into the real, as exemplified by the four "sleeping tower" bedrooms of the Four Eyes House.  Theorist Michael Benedikt nicely encapsulates this simple but powerful thesis in his treatise For an Architecture of Reality, stating:

“...in our media-saturated times it falls to architecture to have the direct aesthetic experience of the real at the center of its concerns.”

Construction progress on the Hangar Office in Culver City

Construction on Servicon System's Hangar Office is well under way!  Metal framing is nearly complete, trenching and rough plumbing is done, and the new skylight openings are cut.  The project's spatial volume and qualities of light are turning out nicely.  In the next few weeks we'll see the mechanical ductwork installation, application of the SPF roof coating, and electrical rough-in.

Ed Ogosta speaks on Sustainability + Design panel

Tonight Ed Ogosta participated in a Sustainability + Design panel discussion organized by Angeleno magazine.  Joining him on the panel were noted architects Michael Lehrer FAIA, David Hertz FAIA, developer Richard Loring, and moderator Alan Klein. The group discussed current issues in ecological architecture, including technological advances, "greenwashing", global marketplace impacts, and sustainable home design. An audience of approximately 100 guests attended the event, which took place at Room + Board in the historic Culver City Helms Bakery.

Ed Ogosta is a Visiting Professor at CEDIM in Monterrey, Mexico

This summer, Ed Ogosta led design studio as a Visiting Professor at the Centro de Estudios Superiores de Diseño de Monterrey  (CEDIM) in Mexico.  As one of twelve invited "Summer Stars", Ed structured his design studio on the topic "Architecture and Experience".  The eight students all did a superb job, each designing their own small house with particular attention to orchestrating sequences, structuring episodes, and identifying key moments. Exploration of these temporal concepts began with students analyzing noteworthy sequences from significant works of cinema, and developing their findings into their projects.

EOA projects selected for AIA national exhibition

Both our Hybrid Office and Four Eyes House have been selected for the 2013 AIA Center for Emerging Professionals Annual Exhibition.  The exhibition "promotes the compelling work of the rising generation of architects" and "inspires professionals to continue to mentor and engage the many talented and motivated emerging professionals across the country".  Our presentation boards are currently on display at AIA National headquarters in Washington, D.C. and are on view until the end of April.

AIA national Small Projects Award for Four Eyes House

We are happy to announce that our Four Eyes House has won the 2013 AIA Small Projects Award in the Unbuilt category.  This is a national award, open to all AIA members.  The jury commented:

“This is exquisite; a minimalist “tour de force”. Conceptual reinforcement of phenomena makes for a very powerful connection with nature. The imagery is expertly rendered and communicated. Both rational and lyrical and possessing excellent spatial quality. Architectural towers and horizontal lines modulate the viewer’s experience and connection with an elemental landscape. It redefines how a home should be built.”

And: 

“One can find minimalist, modern architecture easily these days – design blogs, glossy magazines, and so on. However, minimalist modern architecture that is referential to the cosmos, the horizon, and the sun is rare indeed. This project takes the experience of place and via an ‘architectural amplifier’ of thoughtful movement (ascension into each bedroom space) and choreographed view capture / light receiver (well-placed windows), makes it a triumphant celebration of humankind situated in the center of the natural universe.”

An awards ceremony will be held at the AIA National Convention in Denver on June 20th.  Our presentation boards for this project will also be on view at the convention.

 

EOA wins two Boston Society of Architects | AIA Honor Awards

Following our double win at the AIA Los Angeles Design Awards last October comes another double win tonight at the Boston Society of Architects | AIA Design Awards. Once again, both the Four Eyes House and Hybrid Office won Honor awards, the highest award level that the BSA bestows, in the Unbuilt category. The black-tie gala, held in a Copley Square hotel ballroom, was attended by some 400 guests. It was great to come back to Boston and reconnect with old grad school friends, as well as meet new colleagues. We feel very fortunate for this honor!

We are excited to announce that Edward Ogosta Architecture has won 2012 AIA | LA Next LA Honor Awards for both the Four Eyes House and the Hybrid Office. The Honor Award is the highest AIA design award level available; it is quite unprecedented that an office in its early years receives one, let alone two, such awards at this level. The announcement was made last night at the AIA | LA awards ceremony at Santa Monica's Broad Stage. Given the strong competition by highly-regarded design offices, we are very honored to be recognized by the jury.

Berkeley Nanobrewery

September 20, 2012

EOA has been commissioned to design a nanobrewery + pub on Alcatraz Avenue in Berkeley, California. The project will be a complete interior fitout, incorporating an onsite small-batch craft brewing area and tasting room. Housed in a simple 1950's brick building, the project's main storefront facade will also be sensitively updated. The full design can be seen here.

EOA shortlisted for Annenberg Retreat at Sunnylands

Edward Ogosta Architecture is on the invited shortlist with seven other offices for the Annenberg Retreat at Sunnylands new administration building in Rancho Mirage, California. Designed by noted midcentury architect A. Quincy Jones, the Sunnylands desert estate has hosted numerous U.S. Presidential retreats, diplomatic summits, and state dinners, in addition to being the Annenbergs' winter home. As the youngest firm to make the shortlist, we're honored to be included.
