Project Description:
Located a few blocks inland from the Pacific, the Swell House is a complete overhaul of a dated 1980’s dwelling for a young, five-person family. The oddly nautical Postmodern architecture of the existing house had aged poorly over the years, so our approach was to rigorously prune and normalize the building for a more minimal architectural expression. The project derives its name from the rounded exterior wall forms retained from the existing house, which seemingly evoke the nearby ocean swells. Inside, all rooms were completely remodeled in a light, neutral palette, with a thin floating stair becoming a new signature element that rises through the building. The stair culminates in a new top-floor bar opening onto a redesigned roof deck, where one can now enjoy unobstructed views of the coastline.
